Installation

Instructions​

To start using MigratorXpress, first request a trial: you receive the download link and a free 30-day license file by email. Customers download the same package.

Once downloaded, unzip MigratorXpress to a directory of your choice.

Save the license file you received by email (TRIAL-MigratorXpress-….lic, or SUBSCRIPTION-MigratorXpress-….lic for customers) as %APPDATA%\MigratorXpress\license.lic:

MigratorXpress does not run without it. For other ways to provide it, see License Information.

You can verify the installation by checking the version:

.\MigratorXpress.exe --version

The output ends with the version, for example migratorxpress 0.8.0.

What's Included​

There is a single package per platform, for the trial and for subscriptions (the license file makes the difference). It has the following layout:

The package includes the FastTransfer engine in the engine/ directory, found automatically: no need to specify --fasttransfer_dir_path. It is the FastTransfer version this MigratorXpress release was tested with (0.18.1 for MigratorXpress 0.8.0). Your MigratorXpress license also licenses it: no separate FastTransfer.lic is needed.

To use another FastTransfer installation (0.15.0 or later), pass its folder with --fasttransfer_dir_path.

License Information​

License Information

MigratorXpress needs a license file to run, including during the free trial: the trial request emails you a 30-day trial license. MigratorXpress resolves the license in the following order:

  1. MIGRATORXPRESS_LICENSE environment variable — set this for CI/CD or containerized deployments
  2. --license TEXT CLI argument — pass the license content directly
  3. --license_file PATH CLI argument — point to a license file
  4. Default file locations:
    • ~/.migratorxpress/license.lic (Linux)
    • %APPDATA%\MigratorXpress\license.lic (Windows)
    • ./license.lic (current directory)

If no valid license is found, MigratorXpress stops with exit code 13 (LICENSE_ERROR). --help and --version work without a license.

The license file also carries the FastTransfer and ADBC driver licenses: keep the whole file as delivered. MigratorXpress passes them to FastTransfer through a private temporary file that it removes when it exits. You do not need a separate FastTransfer.lic.

A license issued before October 26, 2026 has no FastTransfer block. MigratorXpress then logs a warning and FastTransfer uses its own FastTransfer.lic, as before. Request an updated license to drop it.
